Having a urostomy is a big change to your body, which can take time to get used to. If you’ve recently had surgery, you may be wondering if you’ll ever feel like yourself again. Perhaps facing the start of a new year feels scary and overwhelming, but please remember that with time and patience, most people find they can resume their daily activities, return to work, and enjoy travel and hobbies.
Feeling in need of inspiration?
Head to our website, where you’ll find real-life stories of urostomates like Gary, Lucy, Allen and Rebecca. Having recovered well after their operations, they’re all busy enjoying life to its fullest, from sports and socialising to going on holiday and even learning to fly!
‘I may be on a different path than the one I envisaged for myself, but my health is no longer a barrier, and I’m stronger and more resilient now.’ Gary Layzell
‘I’m embracing life again, working in financial management and enjoying walks with my dog Barney, as well as holidays and nights out with friends. I still like getting dressed up. Sometimes there’s a slight bulge where my bag is if I’m wearing close-fitting clothes. I’m relaxed about it though. I worry about leaks, but I don’t let that hold me back. And on the plus side, there’s no more queuing for the loo at festivals!’ Lucy Curran
‘I’m enjoying life again, and as well as going on camping, walking and kayaking holidays in the UK, France and Luxembourg. My wife Anneke and I have visited family in Holland and Dubai.’ Allen Rowlinson
‘I’ve been throwing myself back into charity work and writing a book. I was even asked to model for a lingerie company, and last year I had a fantastic photo shoot and got my bag out in front of other people. Hopefully, I will get back up flying again—though fully clad, of course!’ Rebecca Giddings
