It has been over 2 months since our inaugural Stoma Tips Learning Day, and I find myself still reflecting on the meaningful conversations and connections made during and after the event. The experience reaffirmed the crucial role that communication and education play in breaking the stigma around living with a stoma. Many of us are likely looking forward to future events where we can continue to learn from experts and fellow ostomates. We all have unique stories, and sharing those personal experiences is essential, as each of us has something valuable to teach one another. In fact, many of us could probably write a book about our journeys—from the moment we first learned about needing a stoma to the process of accepting our new reality. While each of us has navigated this transition differently, sharing our challenges and triumphs can greatly benefit those who are just beginning their journey.
For me, life is now divided into two parts: before my stoma and after. At the start of my stoma journey, I feared that life would never be as enjoyable as it was before. I must admit, during the early stages, that feeling was accurate. However, with time, I realised that, with a few adjustments and re-education of those around me, life gradually returned to a ‘new normal’. In fact, adopting a positive attitude towards my stoma not only helped me accept my new condition but ultimately improved my overall quality of life. I began to prioritise my physical and mental wellbeing, gained a deeper understanding of life and became more aware of what truly matters—such as family, love, and personal passions like travel, cooking and enjoying good food. Regardless of our physical limitations, we all have the power to make the most of our lives.
As strange as it sounds, one of the most challenging things for me this year has been the lack of sun. It felt like summer lasted just a few days before being replaced by the damp, cold weather. Desperate for a change, we decided to take an impromptu road trip south, without any fixed plans, and ended up in Provence, France. Steering clear of the typical tourist crowds, we charted our own course just a few days at a time, without rigid schedules—simply living in the moment and letting our mood guide us. Each day was a new discovery, a celebration of simple pleasure and a deeper appreciation of the art of living. While I’m aware of my stoma every day, I refuse to let it stop me from fully enjoying life.
Life has been an incredible journey, filled with profound lows but also extraordinary highs. Every experience has shaped me into the woman I am today—imperfect, but passionate about living life to the fullest. Despite its challenges, life is beautiful, and our stomas have given us the opportunity to continue embracing it. I am profoundly grateful for mine, as it has given me a second chance at life.
